Nassau County Wildlife Education: Humane Squirrel Removal

Squirrels very often occupy multiple dens at the same time. If you hear the pitter-patter of little feet or the gnawing of little teeth, it is important to investigate your home. Squirrels are very good climbers, so they can easily access your attic without you noticing. If you do find that you have some woodland visitors, there are a few ways to get rid of them.

Humane ways to evict squirrels
· You will need to go into your attic, or where you suspect that they might be hiding. Wait for the mother to leave as she will be aggressive and more difficult to deal with. Once she has left you can place the babies in a warm box and place it outside the entry point. The mother will be able to reach her babies and can relocate them to another den. You can then close off the hole that they were using to enter your home.
· Close off all entry points except the main ones used by the squirrels. You can then install a one-way exclusion funnel that will allow the squirrel to exit but not to come back in. Once you are sure that all of the squirrels have left you can close off the remaining hole.
· You can set several small cages around the area. This will increase your chances of catching the squirrel. Once it has been caught you can remove the cage and release the squirrel outside. Make sure to remove all babies that were found as they will die without their mother. Once again, you need to close all access points that they can utilize.
· If a squirrel is loose in your house they are relatively straightforward to get out. They do not want to be there any more than you want them there. Ensure you keep all pets away as this will only scare them. Close all doors and windows except one. You can then try to “lead” the squirrel towards the opening. Once it is able to see a clear path outside they should be able to leave on their own.
· If the squirrel is trapped inside your chimney it will be unable to leave on its own. Be careful not to start a fire while it is in there as you won’t frighten it off, you will just kill it. You can hang a rope down the chimney that the squirrel can use to climb out. It is helpful to tie knots in the rope. Make sure that it is a thick rope as they will be unable to climb a very thin rope.
· If a squirrel has made a home inside your bird feeder you can try hanging the feeder by a wire. If you use a rope, the squirrel will still be able to climb it. By using a wire, you are ensuring the birds in your garden can still access the food. The squirrel will not be able to reach it.
